Ghana’s Parliament has been adjourned until January 2, 2025, after Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam failed to present the critical 2025 Mini-Budget.
This budget is essential for outlining government expenditure and revenue for the first quarter of the year, and its absence raises concerns about a potential government shutdown starting January 1, 2025.
The adjournment follows significant frustration among Members of Parliament, particularly from the Minority, who criticized the government’s failure to ensure a smooth transition.
Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson expressed disappointment over the lack of fiscal planning and warned of severe repercussions if the budget is not presented in time, including potential legal consequences for the Finance Minister.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin attributed the delay to disagreements with the opposition, asserting that the Finance Minister will present necessary expenditure authorization when Parliament reconvenes.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions within Ghana’s political landscape as the country approaches a new administration.
